Fireplace Plaque Featuring The Coat Of Arms Of France From The Louis XV Period (96x96 Cm)

An 18th-century fireplace plaque, in perfect condition, dating from after 1766, commemorating Louis XV’s annexation of Lorraine. The coat of arms of France, encircled by palm fronds tied with a ribbon bow, is surmounted by a royal crown supported by two winged genii or Renommées, trumpeters rising from the clouds.

In 1737, Stanislas Leszczynski received the duchies of Lorraine and Bar on the condition that, upon his death, they would revert to the French crown. The duchies were in fact administered by a chancellor appointed by France, La Galaizière.
In 1766, upon the death of Stanislas, who died in an accident, Louis XV took possession of Lorraine. Lorraine thus became part of France.
That same year: Formation of the Grand Government of Lorraine-et-Barrois, a union of the duchies of Lorraine and Bar, the three bishoprics of Metz, Toul, and Verdun; French Luxembourg (the bailiwick of Thionville and the provostship of Montmédy); the Duchy of Carignan; the Saar region; and the Duchy of Bouillon.

Plaque from a former private collection in the Meuse region, located in Loisey.
It weighs 106 kg.
