Gisèle Buthod-Garçon, is a leading figure in contemporary ceramics. For over three decades, she has explored the infinite possibilities of raku, an ancient firing technique that she has brilliantly reinvented. Using the so-called “American raku” firing method invented in the 1950s by Paul Soldner, Gisèle approaches contemporary raku in a sculptural manner, skillfully playing with colors and blending warm and cool tones, as well as matte, glossy, and pearlescent glazes.  She gives her pieces simple, expansive, and curved forms and volumes. Her work is distinguished by its poetry and sensuality. Her sculptures, often anthropomorphic, evoke primitive forms and organic rhythms. The glazes, which she works with great mastery, lend her pieces remarkable depth and chromatic richness.
