"Return from Egypt" drop-front secretary desk in light mahogany – Empire period, 19th century
Elegant drop-front secretary desk in light mahogany, Empire period – “Return from Egypt” style, dating from the first half of the 19th century.
This high-quality piece is topped with its original light-colored marble. The upper section opens with a belt drawer, followed by a wide drop-down flap revealing a fully equipped interior consisting of numerous small drawers, compartments, and a central drawer. The drop-down panel forms a spacious writing desk that retains its original leather covering. The lower section opens via two doors, revealing a storage compartment.
The side panels are adorned with superb gilded bronze busts of women in the classical style, characteristic of the “Return from Egypt” style, while the claw feet reinforce the imperial character of this piece. The bronze fittings, metalwork, and lock plates are original.
The quality of the light mahogany, the spectacular grain of the front panel, the harmonious proportions, and the richness of its interior design make this a highly elegant piece of furniture, as decorative as it is functional.
