Jean-Louis Gregoire (1840–1890)
Jean-Louis Gregoire was a famous French academic sculptor , born in Paris on December 17 , 1840 .
The son of a metal engraver , he was steered toward the arts at a very early age .
He began his apprenticeship at the School of Fine - Arts , where he studied under the sculptor Jules Salmson (1823–1902) .
He exhibited at the Salon Of French Artists from 1867 to 1890.
He created numerous works in the academic style .
He primarily created busts and works inspired by classical themes , but also produced works related to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and its aftermath .
He was a member of the Society of French Artists .
Jean-Louis Gregoire died in Paris on January 4 , 1890 .
He is buried at "Pere-Lachaise Cemetery" , his grave bears the name "Louis Jean Gregoire" , with "Louis" possibly being his common first name , as he signed his works "L. Grégoire" .
