An exceptional “Tombeau” or “Fausses Moustaches” chest of drawers,
made of violetwood (Dalbergia caerensis Duke) with curly wood veneer.
It rests on pyramidal legs, set with a stylized claw-shaped bronze finial.
The lower rail is adorned in the center with a scalloped finial, and the top rail is accented with a bronze piece depicting a shell flanked by stylized foliage.
The side panels are curved and adorned at the shoulder level with a bronze figure depicting an ancient warrior resting on stylized foliage.
This chest of drawers features three rows of drawers, two of which are located in the upper section and include a trompe l’oeil secret drawer in the center.
The other two drawers are separated by crossbars adorned with brass fluting.
The drawer pulls, of rare quality, depict classical figures.
It is topped with red Languedoc marble.
This chest of drawers could be attributed to the famous Parisian cabinetmaker “Mathieu Criaerd” (1689–1776).
