Martin Varnish Chest Of Drawers Stamped M.criard
Louis XV period chest of drawers stamped M.CRIARD. Mid 18th century. It features a curved front and straight sides. It opens with four drawers on three rows. The frame and drawer fronts are in fir, while the woodwork is in oak. The entire chest of drawers has been relacquered in martin varnish (recent work) in the taste of 18th-century Chinese and Japanese lacquers. The decoration features gilded landscape scenes on a black lacquer background, depicting mountains, rocks, factories and various trees and flowers... These scenes are framed by foliage friezes. The piece is topped with Emperador marble, with brown and brown elements shaded with beige cement. Finely chased and gilded bronze fittings include falls, sabots, handles, escutcheons and lamp bases. The locks are from the 19th century. They are functional and fitted with an antique key. This chest of drawers is stamped twice by M.CRIARD, on the front right-hand upright and the rear left-hand upright. The Jurande (JME) hallmarks accompany them. M.CRIARD for Antoine Mathieu CRIARD, received Master on April 22, 1747, eldest son of the famous cabinetmaker Mathieu CRIAERD. He worked successively on rue de Charenton, rue de Richelieu, rue Saint-Thomas-du-Louvre and finally, in 1771, on rue du Bac, where he took over the workshop of his colleague Charles Chevallier. His stamp, spelled "CRIARD", with or without initial, distinguished his work from that of his father. He would have received orders from merchant-merchants and even from the Court, through Joubert, supplier to the Garde-Meuble royal. Antoine Mathieu produced mostly Louis XV furniture in veneers and marquetry, but also, like his father, in Chinese lacquer and Martin varnish.
