Cast-iron Deer Head From Val D’osne – Circa 1880
This impressive cast-iron stag head was produced by the renowned Val d’Osne Foundry and is documented in the firm's 1880 catalogue. Founded in Haute-Marne in the 19th century, Val d’Osne became internationally celebrated for the exceptional quality of its ornamental and sculptural ironwork, supplying public parks, estates, and prestigious architectural projects throughout Europe and beyond.
Rendered with remarkable naturalism, the model captures the strength and elegance of a mature stag with imposing antlers, expressive eyes, and finely textured fur around the neck and forehead. The rich dark surface enhances the sculptural details and gives the piece a powerful decorative presence.
Originally conceived as a wall-mounted trophy, the reverse retains its original mounting structure. Both decorative and highly collectible, this rare example embodies the artistic ambition and technical excellence that made the Val d’Osne foundry one of the leading producers of French art castings during the second half of the 19th century.
An outstanding statement piece for a hunting lodge, country house, or eclectic interior, combining sculpture, craftsmanship, and historic character.
