Important 19th-century Oil-on-panel Painting Depicting A Veduta Of Venice
An important 19th-century oil-on-panel painting depicting a veduta of Venice. It shows the Grand Canal with its gondolas, sailboats, and a large church with colonnades on the right. It bears a strong resemblance to the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore or the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. This style is known as vedutism. Canaletto and Francesco Guardi were the masters of this genre. The frame is magnificent, made of gilded wood in the Rococo style with highly detailed carvings: shells, volutes, and latticework motifs. This type of frame was often associated with paintings brought back from Italy around 1850.
