Louis XV Style Side Table, Mid-ury. Marquetry On Mahogany;
Artist: Pierre-jean David(1788-1856) Et Ferdinand Barbédienne.
This sculpture by Pierre-Jean David, known as David d'Angers, is a smaller version of his statue at the Ambroise Paré monument in Laval, which was unveiled in 1840.
P.J. David was born in Angers in 1788 (hence his nickname “d’Angers”) and died in Paris in 1856. In 1840, he created the full-length bust of Ambroise Paré (1510–1590), a brilliant physician and military surgeon who later served as the King’s surgeon.
Our bronze is therefore a “Collas” mechanical reduction: stamped “Cachet” on the pedestal and “No. 48453” beneath it, and
cast by F. Barbedienne. The great surgeon stands, deep in thought, wearing his physician’s cape and his “fraise.”
On the pedestal: “Ambroise Paré.” To his
right, a stack of books and instruments he invented; on
the pedestal: “Pierre-Jean David 1840.”
Leaning against the wall behind him is what appears to be a “prosthesis,” along with the inscription “F.
Barbédienne, foundryman.” The subject, casting, and
patina are of very high quality.
