Art Deco Period Console Table For Games, In Rio Rosewood, Amboyna Burl And Mahogany.
Artist: Krass Christian (1868-1957)
When the console table's top is opened, another piece of furniture is revealed: an Art Deco games table. The console's wide, canted top features an amboyna burl marquetry inlay, framed by a broad frieze of Rio rosewood and mahogany with crow's beak edges. It rests on a wide, canted apron, matching the top. The entire piece rests on three fluted, mahogany spindle legs ending in bronze sabots. Opening the top reveals an octagonal games table, which rests on the retractable mahogany drawer in the back of the console. It is upholstered in black leather, surrounded by a frieze in Rio rosewood, enhanced with a fine molding in gilded wood. The Lyon cabinetmaker, Christian Krass (1868-1957), designed and executed this type of furniture, which is reminiscent of the work of Ruhlmann.
