A cascade of Mediterranean fish tumbles from a wicker basket. This beautiful still life is the work of the Provençal painter Adolphe Jourdan (1825-1889). It is a mature work, dated 1881, by the painter who was born in Nîmes in 1825 and died in the same city. In the foreground, on the right, one recognizes a superb scorpionfish and, still in the basket, a superb wrasse (or roucaou): both emblems of Marseilles bouillabaisse! In fact, Jourdan painted the result of a successful coastal fishing trip, accompanied by its seaweed and seagrass. Signature and date, lower right: "A. Jourdan 1881". Beautiful stuccoed and gilded wooden frame: 67 x 79 cm. Very good condition.
