Bronze “hercules And Antaeus” – After A Model By Stefano Maderno – Signed Trodoux

Important sculptural group in patinated bronze depicting the struggle between Hercules and Antaeus, executed after a model attributed to the Italian sculptor Stefano Maderno (1576–1636).

The composition depicts the celebrated episode from Greek mythology in which Hercules lifts Antaeus from the ground, preventing him from drawing his strength from contact with Mother Earth. The two figures are portrayed in a dynamic intertwined composition, with particular attention given to the anatomical rendering, muscular tension and movement of the bodies.

The group is distinguished by its rich dark brown patina, with a smooth and subtly lustrous surface that enhances the modelling of the figures and the complexity of the composition. Particularly refined are the treatment of the hair and anatomical details, as well as the intricate interlacing of the limbs, a characteristic feature of this celebrated subject.

The bronze is signed “TRODOUX” (attributable to the 19th-century French sculptor Henri Émile Trodoux) and displays a fine quality of execution, with a strong sculptural presence and remarkable decorative impact.

The composition is completed by an important octagonal bronze base, proportionate to the group and harmoniously integrated into the overall design.
