An elegant and beautiful watercolor depicting a desert landscape by Louis NEVILLE (1852–1919). He is listed as a watercolorist, and his works date from 1870 to 1919. Originally from England, he primarily painted works in the Southern Hemisphere; his well-known views include Timaru and Caroline Bay, but much of his body of work also consists of landscapes from Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti. He was a traveling artist, and some of his works are housed in the National Library of New Zealand. As for this unmarked view, it could easily be located in Australia, a country with landscapes identical to this one. This watercolor depicts two merchants walking through a rocky desert. The colors are warm and soft, and the panoramic format lends the piece a certain charm; it is signed in the lower right corner. A high-quality work in generally good condition, with a few slight water stains; framed in gilded wood with antique glass.
