"19th Century Saint Sebastian Tapestry Embroidery"
A superb and elegant 19th-century embroidered depiction of Saint Sebastian. Saint Sebastian is shown standing, bound against a tree, while archers fire at him. Presented on red velvet to highlight the lighter tones of the tapestry, this piece is displayed in a period blackened wood frame. The embroidery is exquisitely fine and remains vibrant and in perfect condition. Saint Sebastian is the patron saint of archers, infantrymen, and police officers, and also the third patron saint of Rome (along with Peter and Paul). He is especially invoked against the plague and epidemics in general. Frequently depicted in art, he became a homoerotic symbol during the Renaissance before being considered a homosexual icon from the 19th century onward.
