Double-sided, Flat-topped Louis XV-style Desk In Black And Red Lacquer, Late 19th Century.
An elegant, double-sided Louis XV-style writing desk made in the late 19th century.
Resting on four particularly slender, curved legs, this desk captivates with its delicate proportions and harmonious lines. The delicately scalloped crossbars and tapered legs give the piece a light and refined silhouette, completely free of any heaviness.
Its glossy black lacquer-effect finish is accentuated by an elegant red trim visible on the inside of the legs, as well as by a fine red border running along the moldings. This red trim follows the curves of the piece and subtly highlights the contours of its structure. The contrast between the deep black, the warm red, and the patinated bronze is particularly striking.
The tabletop retains its original antique leather, embellished with a gold-iron-stamped frieze and surrounded by a gilded bronze frame adorned with rocaille spandrels at the corners. It shows some signs of use and minor wear consistent with its age, with no tears or missing pieces.
The gilded bronze hardware, complete and original, also includes openwork finials, pull handles, lock plates, and wraparound feet. The bronzes feature a beautiful antique patina that fully contributes to the piece’s overall charm.
This desk is finished on both sides, allowing it to be displayed in the center of a room. One side features three drawers, including a central drawer that locks, while the reverse side features the same decorative design. The drawers, made of walnut and joined with dovetail joints, are a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship.
A high-quality piece of furniture that is at once elegant, decorative, and perfectly functional. Its slender silhouette, balanced proportions, and harmonious contrasts give it a particularly appealing presence, making it equally at home in a classic interior as in a more contemporary setting.
In very good condition.
