Spectacular State Table In The Napoleon III Renaissance Style, In
Renaissance-style Napoleon III ceremonial table, 19th century. An impressive table featuring carved creatures depicting griffins or winged chimeras with female busts—very typical of the Neo-Renaissance style around 1860–1880. These figures were meant to protect the furniture and demonstrate the owner’s power. This rare table is striking, crafted from solid walnut with its warm reddish-brown color. Walnut was the premier wood for ceremonial furniture during this period. The curved legs, which converge on a central shaft—a classic feature of bourgeois Second Empire parlor tables—as well as the molded tabletop, with its thickness and scalloped edge, are typical of the 1850s–1880s.
Most of these tables date from 1860 to 1880. French workshops, especially in Paris, and Italian ones excelled at these highly theatrical figurative carvings. It was a prestigious piece, made to take pride of place in the center of a parlor.
