Paire De Chérubins Musiciens En Fonte XIXeme
Pair of musical cherubs seated on a Corinthian-style capital. They play an instrument resembling a lute or mandolin. The reddish-brown patina is typical of painted cast iron, with traces of wear that give it great cachet. The details are fine: the wings, the crown of fruit/flowers in the hair, the drapery... it's beautiful work.
These cherubs were often sold in pairs to frame a mantelpiece, a portal, or to adorn a garden. The other is its counterpart, perhaps playing another instrument in a symmetrical pose.
These cast-iron sculptures date from the late 19th century, in the Napoleon III / Belle Époque style.
Cast-iron art was very much in vogue during this period.
