Large Artificial Horizon By Lorieux, 19th-century Navy Collection
Artist: Edmond Lorieux
Large artificial horizon marked "Dépôt de la marine 200 E. Lorieux père à Paris," circa 1880, with a plaque on the lid reading: "Dépôt de la Marine Lorieux 200 Fluid Horizon"
The case, complete, includes two reservoirs, a spacer grid, a glass mercury vial in a boxwood container, a brass oil vial, and the pyramid-shaped horizon.
This large artificial horizon is in very good original condition.
The instrument was used at sea when other methods were unavailable. It consists of a reflective surface (liquid or mirror) that must be perfectly still and horizontal. The angle between the image of the celestial body reflected on this surface and the actual celestial body in the sky is then measured.
The case measures 33.5 x 19 x 16 cm.
