A reducing compass made of brass and steel, with an unusual shape and four folded points. The compass is unsigned but French, circa 1800-1820. This type of reducing compass was certainly used in cartography or marine navigation to allow for easy placement on a map or plan. In good condition. The instrument is kept in its morocco leather case lined with silk and green velvet. The compass measures 17 cm in length and the case 18 x 4 cm. Uncommon.
