Kurdish Rug. Persian. Circa 1920. 140 X 100 Cm
Sometimes, certain pieces “speak” to us more than others. There is something remarkable—even relentless—about this one… Its simplicity, or rather, its restraint and power. Look at the central field—it’s dominated by 12 stylized scorpions arranged in two longitudinal grids. Their slightly offset and thus asymmetrical shapes give me the sensation that each of these arachnids is in motion, ready to protect the occupants of the nomadic dwelling.
The colors are wonderful—some with a slightly vibrant quality—a masterful blend of brightness and softness. The overall harmony is sensational; it is at once subtle, delicate, and delightful.
This central field is framed by three borders: two featuring a flowing water motif, and the middle one, set against an indigo-blue background, displaying very pretty floral motifs.
This rug does not seek to impress with its finesse or even extraordinary craftsmanship, yet it fascinates me. I am deeply captivated by its shades of pistachio green (rare), light indigo blue—sometimes deep and saturated—red ochre, and cream brown.
Woven and knotted with wool on wool.
The quality of the hand-spun wool is remarkable—it’s very soft. The pile is about 1 cm high.
Impeccable selvedges, with a securing knot at each end; in very fine condition.
Undoubtedly the work of the Kurdish people.
A true little treasure
