A native of Switzerland, Wilhelm Gimmi exhibited this painting at the Galerie Druet (during the period when Glaisine Druet, the widow, ran the gallery from 1916 to 1938 at 20 rue Royale in Paris). It was purchased there directly, as evidenced by the label on the back of the painting.
The artists exhibited at the Galerie Druet during that period included “the Nabis” and “Post-Impressionists” (Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Félix Vallotton—a Swiss friend of Gimmi’s), “Les Fauves” (Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, Othon Friesz), and the sculptors: Auguste Rodin and Aristide Maillol.
This prestigious provenance, registered under number 12887 at an avant-garde gallery during the École de Paris exhibition, confers an exceptional pedigree.

Wilhelm Gimmi was born on August 7, 1886, in Zurich[1],[2]. In 1906, he graduated from the École normale in Küssnacht and then enrolled at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich with the aim of teaching drawing[1]. He studied at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1908 to 1910[3], then joined Jean Arp, Walter Helbig, and Oscar Lüthy in the Moderne Bund movement, founded in Weggis in 1911. Based in Paris from 1911 to 1940, he was a member of the Salon d’Automne beginning in 1920

The Moderne Bund, or L’Alliance Moderne, (in German: Der moderne Bund), was a group of modern and avant-garde artists that evolved into an artistic movement, founded in 1911 by Jean Arp, Walter Helbig, and Oscar Lüthy in the small town of Weggis in German-speaking Switzerland. Shortly thereafter, Paul Klee, Wilhelm Gimmi, and Hermann Huber joined the core group [1]. Ferdinand Hodler and Cuno Amiet were also invited to join.

Founded in 1969 by Suzanne Gimmi following her husband’s death, the Wilhelm Gimmi Foundation is dedicated to promoting the work of the Zurich-born painter, who settled in Chexbres in 1940. It preserves the artist’s studio collection, which was deposited at the Jenisch Museum in 1991: some 70 oil paintings on canvas, about 100 lithographs, and more than 1,000 drawings. Trained in Zurich, Wilhelm Gimmi (1886–1965) settled in 1908 in Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian. A co-founder of the Moderne Bund in 1911 alongside Klee, Arp, Helbig, Lüthy, and Huber, he was part of one of the first associations of modern Swiss artists and helped promotion of the avant-garde in Switzerland. As early as 1919, while exhibiting at the Salon d’Automne alongside Bonnard, Matisse, and Marquet, he achieved his first successes in Paris, the prelude to an international career. The artist’s favorite subjects—nudes andgenre scenes—evolved after he settled in Chexbres into scenes of winegrowing and landscapes of Lake Geneva.
