Tosca Tillony (1902-?) - Venice: La Giudecca
Oil on cardboard. Signed and dated. Tosca Tillony's trip to Italy in the late 1920s awakened in him a sensibility that sought to reconcile the avant-garde of Central Europe with the solidity of Mediterranean classicism. Traveling through the cities of Tuscany and Umbria, Tillony absorbed not only the radiant light that bathes the frescoes of Piero della Francesca, but also developed a technique in which the geometric rigor of Polish New Objectivity was softened by the influence of Renaissance humanism. His canvases from this period abandon industrial harshness to embrace a palette of earthy tones, sienna, and cerulean blues, where Italian architecture becomes the metaphysical stage for a profound silence. This journey was, in essence, a process of stylistic refinement: Italy offered Tillony the scale and proportions necessary to transform his painting into a timeless dialogue between 20th-century modernity and the lasting heritage of marble and olive wood. - Image dimensions without frame: 46 x 35 cm / 57 x 46 cm with exclusive custom frame.
