Nybo developed an intimate body of work, focusing on interior scenes, often lit by lamp or candlelight. He depicts female figures absorbed in quiet activities such as reading or listening to music. His style, influenced by Dutch painting of the XVIIth century, is characterized by a subdued atmosphere and great attention to nuance.
At the same time, he painted landscapes inspired by the coast of Zeeland and his travels in Norway, dominated by twilight moods and Nordic light effects. His stays in Paris at the beginning of the XXth century further enriched his palette.
Exhibitin gregularly at Charlottenborg from 1892, Nybo remained a discreet artist, hampered in part by poor health the last two decades of his life. Today, his work is appreciated for its delicacy and poetry of everyday life.
