Erma (Ermo) Zago was born in Bovolone, near Verona, in 1880. He studied at the Cignaroli Academy in Verona under Angelo Dall’Oca Bianca before moving to Milan in 1901, where he developed most of his artistic career and remained until his death in 1942. Although he also painted views of Verona, Rome and Naples, his name is chiefly associated with Venice, whose views remain the most recognizable and appreciated part of his production today.

A tireless traveller, he devoted himself to urban views, scenes of everyday life and portraiture. In 1924 he was appointed Honorary Member of the Brera Academy. There were years when his name was particularly sought after on the art market, with some works achieving prices of several thousand euros; the market, as we know, follows fashions, while paintings remain what they are — indeed, they remain themselves.

Like many Italian painters of the early twentieth century, Zago did not entirely abandon the lessons of Impressionism but reinterpreted them through a distinctly Italian sensitivity to colour and light. His brushwork breaks into rapid luminous touches, while colour itself builds form and atmosphere. Venice, with its reflections, shifting shadows and constantly changing lagoon light, provided one of the subjects most suited to his artistic temperament.

This small panel depicts a corner of everyday Venice animated by women, children and passers-by gathered before a church, beside market stalls. The artist’s interest lies less in a precise architectural description than in capturing the visual and luminous impression of the place. The figures emerge from a network of quick, textured brushstrokes, while light shapes the scene through vibrant juxtapositions of pure colour.

The subject belongs to the group of small Venetian views for which Zago is best known today: campi, churches, markets and scenes of daily urban life observed directly and translated onto panel with immediacy, privileging atmosphere and effects of light over detailed description.
