Federico Schianchi – View Of Rome With Castel Sant’angelo, Watercolor, 19th Century

Artist: Federico Schianchi
A fine watercolor on paper depicting a view of Rome with Castel Sant’Angelo, the Ponte Sant’Angelo, and the dome of St. Peter’s in the background, reflected in the golden waters of the Tiber. In the foreground, several fishermen bring the scene to life from a small boat moored at the riverbank, lending the composition that touch of everyday life among the common people so dear to the 19th-century Roman veduta tradition. The light is rendered with great mastery: the sky, streaked with dramatic clouds, opens onto shades of amber and gold that envelop the entire view in an atmosphere that is at once melancholic and sublime. The architectural rendering of the monuments is precise and documentary in style, with Castel Sant’Angelo dominating the scene on the right, while the silhouette of Michelangelo’s dome emerges solemnly on the horizon. This work is by Federico Schianchi, a painter from Modena active in the second half of the 19th century, known for his high-quality views of Rome intended for international collectors and the Grand Tour market. It is set in a period gilded carved frame, decorated with volutes and acanthus leaves.
