Oil Painting On Copper Depicting "crucifixion" From The Late 17th Century
Artist: Ambito Fiammingo
This oil on copper painting takes up a theme dear to religious painting, the Crucifixion of Christ. At Christ's feet are Saint John with a magnificent red drape, and on the opposite side is the Mother of Christ, the Virgin Mary, in a blue and white dress. The sky, as in the Ancient Scriptures, features heavy, turbulent clouds, and in the background is a view of a city. The style of painting, the chromatic scale, and the manner in which the figures are depicted, draw me back to a type of Flemish painting from the second half of the 17th century. The frame is in the style of 17th-century Northern European painting, but was created in the 19th century.
