Bronze Group "the Farnese Bull" By Righetti, Late 18th Century
Artist: Righetti
An important patina bronze sculpture depicting the "Farnese Bull" by the Roman bronzesmith Francesco Righetti (1749-1819), finely chiseled and in its original patina. The classical marble group of the Farnese Bull was originally in Rome, where the artist studied it and reproduced it in bronze, and was then transferred to Naples by Ferdinand IV. Righetti often reproduced statues and groups from the Classical era for foreign nobles who came on the Grand Tour and wished to bring back memories of their homelands. The base on which the bronze rests is contemporary, and the marbles it is composed of are "reclaimed" marbles found in ancient Rome: statuary, cipollino, and africano marble.
