Ivory Relief “the Binding Of The Sleeping Silenus” With Wood, Ivory And Tortoiseshell Frame
Artist: Seguace François Du Quesnoy
This is a fine ivory relief carved in high relief, entitled “The Binding of the Sleeping Silenus”, a Baroque work dating to the second half of the 17th century and attributed to the circle of the Flemish sculptor François Du Quesnoy, renowned for his classical style and his mastery in depicting putti. The mythological subject captures a lively Bacchic scene in which the aged satyr Silenus is shown asleep in a wooded landscape, while playful putti and young satyrs mischievously bind him with ivy garlands, and a nymph paints his eyebrows. With its monochromatic tonality, the piece evokes the aesthetic of ancient marble sculptures that were highly prized by collectors of the period. The relief is accompanied by CITES certification attesting to its age and lawful provenance for international sale. It is set within an elegant architectural frame in ebonized wood (probably ebony or stained wood), featuring molded profiles and a recessed panel veneered in blond tortoiseshell, highlighted by ivory fillets.
