20th Century Gouache – Harbour Scene With Boats At Dock – Germaine Balthazard-bernard (1883-197
A fine original gouache depicting a harbour scene with fishing boats and sailing vessels moored at a quay, village houses visible in the background beneath a cloudy sky rendered in soft blue and grey tones. The dark reflections of the hulls in the still water lend the composition an intimate and poetic atmosphere, characteristic of early 20th-century French marine painting. The brushwork is free and expressive, the palette carefully harmonised.
Signed lower left G. Balthazard Bernard.
