Hooded Cape In Indian Style Or Polish-style Wrap - Provence, Circa 1800–1820
Circa 1800–1820
Provence
Long hooded cape made of calico, known as an "Enveloppe à la Polonaise" due to its wide pleated and embossed borders around the edges. This large hood, held in place by pleating at the back, corresponds precisely to the volume of the “Calèches” that covered the high hairstyles of the late 18th century. The base is made of Indian calico printed with a copper roller, known as “Mignonette” due to the geometric, repetitive pattern of rust- and yellow-colored wheels and vermicules. No closure hook. The inner lining is made from reused Indian calico fabrics dating from the First Empire, one printed in indigo reserve and the other in madder-red mignonette. A small stain (1.5 cm) and slight wear on the Indian cotton lining at the neckline are the only flaws to note. The Indian fabrics have retained their original finish. Good color and condition.
