Small Socketed Axe With A Side Ring – Late Bronze Age, Protohistory, Archaeology

Small socketed axe with a lateral ring – Late Bronze Age, protohistory, archaeology

Rare small socketed axe featuring a side ring, characteristic of the Late Bronze Age (c. 1300–800 BCE).

Based on its typology, this specimen appears to be linked to a Breton workshop. It features a remarkable dark green archaeological patina, deep and lustrous, attesting to its age and excellent state of preservation.

This axe is also notable for its small size: at only 7.5 cm in length, it is significantly smaller than most axes of this type known from this period. Its unsharpened edge and atypical size lead to interpreting it not as a utilitarian tool, but rather as a votive object or a form of proto-currency. This hypothesis is widely accepted by many archaeologists, as these small axes are frequently discovered in hoards or large collections rather than in domestic contexts.

A very fine collector’s item illustrating the symbolic and economic practices of the late Bronze Age.

Appraised by Daniel Lebeurrier (Galerie Gilgamesh, Paris).

Dimensions: 7.5 cm in length.
