Box Decorated With Lotus Motifs. Japan, 19th/20th Century
A rectangular chest covered in black lacquer and decorated with a painted design featuring lotus flowers and kingfishers amidst foliage. The composition features shades of gold, green, brown, and red, characteristic of objects intended for both the Japanese market and export, which were highly prized in the late Meiji and Taishō periods. The edges of the lid and front are surrounded by a frame decorated with golden plant motifs. The interior of the box is lined with paper.
