Madonna and Child with Saints Roch and Sebastian

Oil on panel, 44 x 38 cm

This panel, dating from the 16th century, represents a significant example of devotional painting from the Lower Adriatic, serving as a synthesis between the solemnity of the Byzantine East and the naturalism of the Western Renaissance. The composition centers on the Madonna and Child, where the Virgin is portrayed with a melancholic expression and dressed according to post-Byzantine canons, wearing a red tunic and a dark cloak outlined by subtle golden highlights that define its folds in a graphic manner. The Child, seated on his mother’s lap, reaches out toward the saint in a gesture of blessing. On either side stand the patron saints against plagues, Sebastian and Roch: the former, on the left, appears tied to a tree and pierced by arrows, rendered with a deliberately schematic and symbolic anatomy, while the latter, on the right, wears the typical attributes of a pilgrim, such as a staff and a shell, pointing to the plague bubo on his thigh to emphasize his role as a health intercessor. The work is fully in the tradition of the Dalmatian-Cretan school, a style characterized by marked linearity and the use of warm, earthy colors that define monumental yet almost two-dimensional figures, devoid of Venetian sfumato but imbued with an immediate communicative power. This artistic production, typical of the workshops operating along the coasts of Apulia, Dalmatia, and the Greek islands, demonstrates how a universal figurative language persisted in the 16th century, capable of uniting the different shores of the Adriatic, blending the solemnity of the Greek icon with Latin sacred narrative in an image intended for the spiritual reassurance and protection of the faithful
