"Fisherman on the old port of Marseille"
Oil on cardboard,
Signed lower right,
Cartouche with artist's name on frame,
In this composition, Marseille painter Louis Audibert depicts fishermen on Marseille's old port, certainly returning from fishing and busy cleaning their fishing nets.
The artist creates a composition with contrasts and a harmony of colors in a fauve style influenced by his friend the painter Louis Mathieu Verdilhan.
The painter, certainly out of a concern for economy, used an old painted panel to create this work.
Pupil of Alphonse Moutte at the Marseille School of Fine Arts from 1898, Louis Audibert went up to Paris for the 1900 Universal Exhibition and discovered the work of the Impressionists and Cézanne. After completing his military service in Toulon in 1906, he returned to Paris before settling permanently in Marseille.
From this date onwards, he exhibited still lifes and views of Marseille and the surrounding area at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne.
