Orthodox Icon Depicting The Prophets Of The Old Testament 19th Century
A beautiful icon painted on canvas and then mounted on a wooden panel, depicting a gathering of prophets in a composition that appears to evoke a Eucharistic foreshadowing.
The figures are accompanied by inscriptions in Greek, now partially effaced, making some identifications difficult. Nevertheless, a study of the iconographic attributes allows several figures to be recognised with a high degree of certainty. In particular, the prophet Zechariah can be distinguished, whilst a figure holding a small ladder may be identified as the patriarch Jacob. Another figure, carrying a model of a building, appears to be identifiable as King and Prophet David. Another figure, whose inscription remains partially legible, can be identified as the prophet Ezekiel.
Most of the figures are holding scrolls. The work forms part of the vast iconographic repertoire of the Old Testament prophets.
The work features a particularly rich composition, combining inscriptions, symbols and attributes specific to each figure. It bears witness to the continuity of the Orthodox iconographic tradition in the 19th century and to the importance attached to the visual transmission of sacred texts.
Condition: the painting shows signs of deterioration and losses in the paint layer, accompanied by an extensive network of craquelure; overall, this is consistent with its age. The icon remains perfectly legible and retains all its visual impact.
