Historical Teratological Medical File On A Case Of Sirenomelia, 1936

Set of original medical documents relating to a clinical observation of a case of sirenomelia (fusion of the lower limbs) dated May 13, 1936, carried out at the Maternity Hospital in Tours. Unusually for the time, the sirenoid child is still alive. This file belongs to Dr. Faix, a practitioner attached to the Tours School of Medicine in the early 20th century, Professor of Obstetrics at the Tours School of Medicine, and chief obstetrician at the Tours Maternity Hospital.

It includes:
– Several period photographs of the newborn with the anatomical malformation
– An X-ray of the lower limbs
– Two typewritten documents: the first document describes the case in detail over six pages and is annotated by hand by the doctor. The second document, over two pages, is an anatomical description, probably made following the autopsy.

The documents are authentic and consistent with medical practices at the beginning of the 20th century, a period during which teratological observations and rare cases were communicated to regional medical societies.
The context is strictly medical and academic.
This type of comprehensive file, combining clinical text, original photographs, and period radiographic imagery, remains uncommon and is of definite interest to the history of medicine and medical photography.

Dr. Faix was a doctor practicing in Tours at the beginning of the 20th century, cited in:
- Estelle Wolozyn's thesis "Midwives and abortion between 1920 and 1975."
- The medical gazette of the center of July 1, 1910.
- The medical gazette of the center of July 15, 1919.
- "The history of the school of medicine and pharmacy of Tours from 1803 to 1970" by Jean Moline in 2005.

Condition: good overall condition considering the fragility of the paper and radiographic media. Wear and tear and slight marks consistent with age.
