Empire Period Walnut Column Chest Of Drawers, 19th Century
Empire chest of drawers with detached columns in solid walnut and flamed walnut veneer
France, first half of the XIXᵉ century, circa 1810-1830
Elegant Empire period chest of drawers opening with 4 drawers on the front, made of solid walnut and remarkably veined flamed walnut veneer. The front is punctuated by two detached columns with chased bronze rings, an emblematic feature of Empire furniture.
The drawers feature a carefully assembled veneer in symmetrical sheets highlighting the natural patterns of the wood. The top drawer is adorned with a gilded bronze applique featuring two confronting swans framing a central trophy, a decoration typical of the Imperial repertoire. The locks are embellished with original bronze escutcheons and retain their trefoil keys.
The ensemble rests on cylindrical legs in line with the columns, giving the piece of furniture a balanced and elegant architectural presence. The interior of the drawers retains its old-fashioned workmanship with period assemblies.
This chest of drawers seduces with the quality of its walnut, the richness of its veneer and the refined sobriety of its ornamentation, representative of the best provincial Empire furniture.
