A native of Marseilles, Jean Pesce was a discreet man and an accomplishedand an accomplished painter, whose workcharacterized by vivid colors, an expressive brushwork and a synthesis ofimportant traditions of French modernism, including the Nabi movementFauvism and Post-Impressionism.

In 1979, he was awarded theGrand Prix de la Fondation Ricart, followed by the Grand Prix du Salon d'Automne deSalon d'Automne de Marseille in 1982, and theMedaille d'Argent de la Société Académique des Arts in 1983. Throughout his career,he exhibited in galleries in Paris and Marseille and took part in major regional art shows. He died in 2024, and his work is a continuation of the FrenchFrench modernist tradition after the Second World War, particularly thoseartists working in the tradition of Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard.

His paintings take us on a journeyof his native Provence, but also to the streets of Paris and New YorkNew York, which he discovered in his youth. He also likes to painttrains, cars and everyday landscapes with a vision of the world thatthe elements of modernity.

Portraits of women(often, as here, his own wife) have a special place in his work.Imbued with poetry, they depict women in their everyday attitudes.
Entitled "The blue room", this painting, which shows his wife putting on her stockings, projects the viewer into a gentle intimacy. The slightly plunging viewpoint, the way theand the way the carpet and wallpaper patterns envelop the silhouette evokes the influence of the Nabis painters, especially Bonnard.
