Kilim Anatolia. 170 X 140 Cm
This is the perfect piece to address a question I'm often asked. What about recent or current productions?
It has to be said that this craft, once so refined and precious, has lost its way in the constraints of productivity. We can't blame anyone, in fact, it has adapted. Once nomadic, weavers made pieces for a need, a use. Kilim embellished and insulated nomadic dwellings. On the floor, on the walls or in the form of removable partitions to separate spaces. Today, the almost systematic use of chemical dyes, more or less coarse weaving and simplified patterns mean that production times can be cut by a factor of ten. Certain economic realities have taken hold. The notion of heritage evaporated, to be replaced by the imitation market.
That's without counting on the perseverance of certain production regions - and we can applaud them! True resisters, these weavers still allow us the hope of "touching a beautiful piece made according to the rules of the art".
Let's take a close look at this kilim, a lovely specimen, beautiful face, proud look and with good reason. Hand-spun wool, vegetable dyes, abrash, fine, regular, precise weaving, stunning indigo blue, depth, luminosity... Without intending to, I've just made an exhaustive list of the characteristics and qualities of an antique piece.
It's the exception that proves the rule.
