Japanese Meiji Satsuma Hanami Bowl, Kyoto Export Ware, C. 1880–1895
An elegant Japanese Satsuma small bowl produced in Kyoto during the Meiji period, circa 1880–1895. This refined cabinet piece belongs to the group of Kyoto export wares admired for their delicate figure painting, restrained compositions and intricate gilding.
The bowl is of finely lobed form with a scalloped rim and an interior Hanami scene depicting aristocratic figures and attendants beneath blossoming trees. The fan-shaped composition is executed in delicate polychrome enamels with extensive kin-de nanako style gilding and dense gold dot decoration across the interior ground.
The restrained elegance of the decoration reflects the refined Kyoto aesthetic of the late Meiji period and contrasts strongly with the more heavily overloaded character of many later export Satsuma wares. The crackled underside bears a painted two-character mark reading 梅山 (Baizan), likely a decorator’s mark.
