Tea Service From The Shipwreck Of Ca Mau (c. 1725, Yongzheng Period)
Rare combination of a teapot and two matching bowls and saucers.
The octagonal teapot is of the "fisherman" type. The alternating panels of its decoration show a fisherman and a Chinese landscape, separated by floral decoration. The latter is also found on the bowls and saucers. We can therefore consider that these elements, although scattered throughout the cargo, do indeed constitute a homogeneous whole.
The very small size of the 18th-century Chinese teapots and corresponding bowls may be surprising, but one must consider that tea in London or Amsterdam at this time was sold, literally speaking, by the weight of gold.
The set is in very good condition, with no chips or cracks.
As usual, the interior and bottom of the teapot have not been completely cleaned in order to testify to its historical underwater origin (photos 5 and 6).
Teapot height: 110 mm. Bowl diameter: 69 mm, saucer diameter: 110 mm. Overall weight: 450 g.
