Kendi From The Wreck Of Ca Mau (c.1725)
Rare kendi from the Chinese shipwreck off the town of Ca Mau (archaeologically dated to c.1725; reign of Emperor Yongzheng). Decorated on each side with a phoenix among peonies painted in underglaze cobalt blue. It has been only lightly cleaned to show its decoration, but marine shells have been left in place to testify to its underwater origin. They can be removed on request.
It is in perfect condition with a still very shiny glaze.
Only four examples of kendi from the shipment (three of this type, including one with a broken beak), were sold in Amsterdam in 2007 by Sotheby's: lot 979.
Height: 26 cm, weight: 1835 g.
