Saint John Nepomuk In Cast Iron, C.1800
Fine cast-iron figure of Saint John Nepomuk, probably Austro-Bohemian work circa 1800. The representation, with its rigorous composition, combines a soberly classicizing formal language with finely worked decorative details in the drapery and ratchet.
The delicately executed ornaments and richly detailed crucifix underline the refined character of this small sacred sculpture. The clear silhouette and pared-down formal vocabulary are still in the tradition of late-Baroque representations of piety in the Habsburg world. In the Habsburg space, John Nepomuk was among the most revered saintly figures and was seen as a symbol of fidelity to the faith and the secret of confession.
