Very fine Art Deco chalice in first-rate sterling silver (950%) set with four sapphires, probably ceylans.
It is quite heavy (800 grams)for its size and is also set with a small ivory cross for which we hold a CITES Q certificate that will be delivered to the purchaser. It is hallmarked with a Minerva head and the master goldsmith hallmark of the Biais firm in Paris, founded in 1782. It became Biais Aîné Fils et Rondelet in 1865, when Biais joined forces with Jean-Baptiste Rondelet, supplier of church ornaments to the Pope. The company went on to be known by several names: Biais Aîné et Cie (1889), Biais Aîné et Noirot Biais (1897), Biais Frères et Cie (1905), before becoming Biais Frères et Fils around 1926. The embroidery and chasuble workshops were located at 74, rue Bonaparte.
