Clock Glass Brocot Exhaust Watchmaker : Japy

Artist: Japy Frère
A Napoleon III period cage clock, circa 1880, this elegant timepiece exquisitely illustrates the late 19th-century taste for visible mechanisms and scientific precision. The rectangular gilt bronze case boasts a simple and perfectly balanced design, resting on a molded base with softened corners, surmounted by a subtly curved cornice. The overall aesthetic is refined, emphasizing transparency and light, with the finely gilt bronze elegantly framing the large glass panels. The case, fitted with thick glass and a wide bevel, features front and back doors providing access to the movement while offering a complete view of the mechanics from all angles. The thick, beveled glass panels accentuate the interplay of reflections and contribute to the precious character of this display clock.

The sublime two-tiered enamel dial is one of the most remarkable features of the piece. The white outer ring, punctuated with black Roman numerals and a finely graduated minute track, contrasts with the openworked central structure in gilt bronze. The center of the dial features a gilt wheel and its escapement with its distinctive anchor, set with red agate stones—a refined detail typical of high-quality timepieces of this era. This escapement, known as the Brocot escapement, remains visible on the dial and animates the dial with a particularly decorative, continuous mechanical movement. The blued steel hands, delicately openworked and finely cut, add a further touch of sophistication to this horological composition.

The movement, crafted entirely from gilt brass, reveals a highly precise construction. Stamped “Japy Frère,” a renowned family and manufacturer of watch mechanisms in the 19th century, it testifies to the French industrial expertise recognized throughout the Napoleon III period. The circular plates, polished pivots, toothed wheels, and various transmission components display exceptionally meticulous execution. The pendulum features cylindrical mercury reservoirs that compensate for temperature variations, ensuring consistent timekeeping. This compensation system, visible in the lower part of the cage, underscores the technical and scientific nature of this clock, designed for discerning clients who value both precision and aesthetics.

With its fully glazed exterior, the quality of its gilt bronze, the delicate design of its exposed dial, and the intriguing nature of its visible mechanism, this cage clock stands as a remarkable example of late 19th-century French horology.

Original mechanism, unmodified, striking the hours and half-hours on an antique bell.
