A seductive interpretation of the biblical story of Suzanne, a beautiful young woman observed by two old men as she takes her bath.
Treated in a very Art Deco style, Suzanne occupies the center of the painting.
The two old men, on the right, blend into the vegetation in a slightly cubist treatment.
Arthur Greuell (1891 - 1966) was a Belgian painter active in France from 1932. After studying at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 1905 to 1909, he became a pupil of Anquetin in Paris. He was influenced by Van Dongen and his friend Edouard Goerg. He exhibited regularly in Parisian salons.
Museums in Paris (Musée National d'Art Moderne and Musée Nat. d'Art Mod. de la Ville de Paris) and Brussels (Musée d'Ixelles) hold works by the artist.
Painting signed lower right and dated "1942"
Oil on canvas, a coarse-grained canvas with lots of substance.
The canvas is slightly distended and has traces of wax reinforcement on the back (see photo)
In a gold and black lacquered wooden frame.
