"André Lhote (1885-1962) Allegorical Scene Circa 1930"
André LHOTE (1885–1962) Allegorical scene, circa 1930 Watercolor on paper, medallion format Mounted under an ivory linen mat, giltwood frame with a molded groove Nameplate "A. LHOTE" at the bottom of the frame. Charming circular watercolor composition, illustrating a dreamlike scene animated by several nude and stylized figures, evolving in a lush landscape with mythological overtones. We can see dancing human figures, a bird in flight, foliage, and fluid curves that punctuate the space. The whole bears witness to André Lhote's unique visual language, combining the legacy of Cubism with a decorative and narrative vein specific to the 1920s and 1930s. The liveliness of the colors—blues, reds, greens, and oranges—and the mastery of the circular composition evoke both modern illuminations and the artist's experiments with the theme of the harmony of forms. Work in excellent apparent condition, protected under glass and presented in a careful frame. No visible damage or restoration. Former private collection. Nameplate attached to the frame, probably as part of an exhibition or museum display. 14 cm without frame.
