Stone Statue Representing A Noble Woman - 15th Century Period
This large statue represents a noble woman or a holy figure, standing or in a frontal position, dressed in a loose garment with a decorated neckline and wearing a veil falling over the shoulders. The oval of the face is regular, the lips closed, the almond-shaped eyes are finely incised, translating an expression both collected and introspective, typical of late Gothic art. The treatment of the gaze, marked by softness and interiority, evokes the devotional or commemorative statues of the late Middle Ages. The hairstyle framing the face refers to the feminine fashion of the 15th century and suggests a high social class. The whole exudes a great formal dignity, despite the marks of erosion which underline the antiquity and prolonged exposure of the stone. Numerous restorations visible, notably on the face.
