"Carved Stone Stele - 19th Century "
Pyramidal funerary stele in homage to the sculptor Félix Journée, collaborator of Bouthemard Père, a masonry firm active on building renovation projects in the Chartres region during the last third of the 19th century. In 1869, Louis-Xavier Bouthemard (born in 1815), a mason by trade, took over the "cathedral works" from the Bourgeois company. His son Louis (born in 1841) succeeded him in 1876. Both worked for the Ministry of Religious Affairs, under the direction of the architect Emile Boeswillwald (1857-1896), successor to Jean-Baptiste Lassus, on the immense restoration project of Chartres Cathedral. For nearly three decades, they contributed to the renovation of major sections of one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals. Dimensions: 71 x 69.5 cm
