Zoomorphic Hardware - 13th Century
This remarkable wrought-iron fitting, dating from the XIIIᵉ century, is distinguished by its zoomorphic decoration of great plastic richness and rare expressiveness.
The ensemble is organized in a network of deeply sculpted, nervous scrolls, the ends of which come alive in organic forms evoking a stylized bestiary - probably a dragon or fantastic creature, an emblematic motif of the medieval imagination. The supple spiral windings suggest both movement and tension, while certain parts are transformed into almost anatomical elements, with reliefs reminiscent of stylized heads, jaws or limbs.
.The metalwork is particularly meticulous: the iron bars have been hammered and shaped with precision, then enriched with engraved or incised motifs that accentuate the lively character of the composition.
Rare testimony to the skills of medieval blacksmiths, this fitting combines decorative power and technical mastery, offering a fine example of the art of ironworking in the Middle Ages.
